When ordering silk thread, if you are replacing a few wraps and are trying to match a color, please tell me what rod make and model you are working on. I sometimes will know which shade will be best when there is more than one choice of shade. Even better is to send me a sample of the old wrap.

Rod Wrapping Restoration Tips

Remember all threads, will probably look a little different than the original wraps and that is generally due to the aging of the thread, the natural darkening of the varnish, varying dye lots or sun fading of the thread. A trick that works pretty good is to mix some oil based stain into the varnish to match the original varnish when doing a rewrap of single wrap. I also sell 1 and 2 ounce bottles of genuine spar varnish, clear lacquer, shellac and a oil based stain to darken the new varnish to match your old varnish. I mix about 20%/80% stain/varnish and have gone as much as 30/70 but it greatly increases the drying/curing time of the varnish. Wanted

I am always looking for jasper silk thread. Will buy or trade. That's the two color thread. All colors. Size 00 silk. Will consider size A. I have a large selection of one off silk thread colors... approximately 300 and still growing.

Some of the thread prices may seem high, but that is to insure that the thread will be available to those in need of the thread most. Many of the thread colors I sell will be impossible to find once I run out so this only way to keep the thread available is by making the price substantial enough that the thread will not be hoarded but used to put those vintage and antique rods back into service or restored to the beauty they once had. I have MANY one of a kind spools of thread. If you need an oddball color, it's possible that I might have it. I sell the 1-of-a-kind spools for $12.00, if you can send a sample of the old thread for me to attempt to match it.

Recent Arrivals

Black & White Nylon Jasper - I  just found a few boxes of this Gudebrod thread in nylon, size A, 50 yard spools. Bargain priced at only $7.00. Finally a lower cost alternative to the expensive and scarce silk b/w jasper. Perfect for the Phillipsons that used nylon and South Bends and other rods that the silk thread price cannot be justified.

Professional Rod Makers and serious restorers I have a few spools of 925 yard spools of vintage silk thread at affordable prices. Black 001, White, Orange, Burnt Orange, Dark Red, Gold, Yellow, Green and others. Go to the silk chart for prices and info.

Rainbow 5 Color Variegated Nylon - Here's another very scarce thread that I got a few boxes of so I've reduced the price from $12.00 to $7.00. Gudebrod size A 50 yards.

OBjaspers.JPG (20385 bytes) Orange/Black Jasper Thread - Famine or feast! There are now at least 4 options available for the Orange/Black Jasper thread. From left to right is the Nylon size A, Rice's Silk size 00, Pearsall's Naples size 4/0 and the Pearsall's Gossamer size 6/0. If you are restoring a rod or repairing a rod you are presented with more decisions. Cost, silk or nylon and thread matching pattern. The preferred option when restoring a vintage rod is to use the Rice's silk. It is expensive but if your rod is a historic or valuable rod or you demand perfection in your work, this is the thread to use.  As most know, it's quite a bit harder to find and/or a lot more expensive. If you are working on a relatively inexpensive rod or are on a tight budget, then the other three alternatives look attractive. The two Pearsall's are a very high quality thread but are a bit lighter in color and the pattern is much finer than the Rice's. If you are refinishing the entire rod, then this is a very good option, but if you are only replacing a few wraps, then you might want to consider the nylon. The nylon thread is a darker shade than the Rice's thread. If your rod has a dark varnish and is not a historic rod, then this is a good option. Click on the picture above for a large picture of the various thread.

I have spools of B/O & B/W Jaspers in Rice's Silk size 00 in stock.

Pearsall's Orange/Black Silk Jasper Thread - Pearsall's English thread size Naples or approx. 4/0. Also available in Gossamer or 6/0. Both are finer than the vintage thread. Should be splendid on new rods or should be acceptable on complete refinish jobs. Also may be acceptable on rods where the thread is sun faded.  $4.50/50 meters

Java Brown - Pearsall's solution for the Payne Java Beige in Naples $3.95/50 meters.  I also recommend the YLI 227 Copper that is a very good match 3/0 200 meters $7.00.

Royal Hunt - This is Pearsall's  solution for the H.L. Leonard Hunt series rod thread which is a rose color silk in Naples size. $3.95/50 meters

Rainbow Variegated Space Dye #Z - Here's a strange one! This is VINTAGE 5 color thread that when wrapped it looks like a rainbow on the rod. If you have a rod that uses this thread, they you know what I'm talking about. I've seen it often on Shakespeare, South Bend and a couple of Montagues. It's nylon size A. $7.00/50yds I also have one spool of this thread in a real thick diameter like D...

Antique Gold #7 Size 3/0 200m of filament thread.  $7.00/spool

Light Blue #18 - Size 3/0 of filament thread. Sky blue color. $7.00/200 m spools

Emerald Green #23 - Size 3/0 of the finest filament thread. YLI 222.  Beautiful rich green color with wonderful brilliance... just like a fine emerald.  $7.00 per 200 meter spool.

of the Gudebrod SILK Thread

YELLOW #4 - Also called Honey Lemon this thread is Gudebrod #207 vintage silk thread size 00. This is a discontinued color, hard to find. $7.00/50yds or $12.00/100yds.

GOLDENROD #5 Finally, I found this color! Gudebrod #209 vintage silk thread size 00. Another discontinued color that is scarce. $7.00/50yds or $12.00/100yds. spool.  Also in 3/0 200m but it is much more orange in tone $7.00/200m.

BURNT ORANGE #9 - Gudebrod #221 vintage silk thread size 00. Another discontinued color $7.00/50yds or $12.00/100yds spools.

MEDIUM BROWN #28 - Gudebrod #541 vintage silk thread size 00. This is one of the most popular colors used today and yesteryears $7.00/50yds or $12.00/100yds spools. In stock is size 0. This is very close to the new stock Gudebrod size 00

6silks3.jpg (18576 bytes) CLICK THE PIC TO VIEW FULL SIZE IMAGE

Maroon #13 - Made by Fortisan by Celanese for The Perfect Thread Company,  this is size 00 and I believe this thread to be from original stock of the Wright McGill company. I obtained this thread along with the tan, red and lt. green from the same seller.$7.00 per 50 yard spool. $12.00 per 100 yds.

Tan #27 - Also called Pongee. This thread is size 00. I have compared this thread and the maroon to other silk thread from the Wright McGill old stock manufactured by Rice's silk and it appears indistinguishable between the two manufacturers. $7.00 per 50 yard spool. $12.00 per 100 yard spool.

Chinese Red #10 - Genuine Rice's Silk thread is size 00. This thread is a brilliant red and is used on many rods by Wright McGill as well as many other rod manufacturers such as Orvis, FE Thomas, Leonard and others. This thread is extremely strong and  the brilliant hues and are in my opinion superior to the new stock of thread being manufactured today. $7.00 per 50 yd. $12.00/100 yd.

Granger Special Light Green #20 *Photo*  I believe this to be original Wright McGill thread stock. The colors in the photo really doesn't accurately reflect the color. This is the extremely scarce silk thread that is so impossible to duplicate. This thread is made by Rice's Silk and is size 00 and may also have been used on a few Phillipson rods. I tried dozens of combinations of thread colors, color preservers, stains, shellac and varnishes trying to match this thread and without success. So no need for you to feel my pain trying to match this color with new thread stock. $75.00 per 50 yard spool.  Sold Out.

Granger Green Silk  (SORRY, SOLD OUT). 3/23/02

Here's what the Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook author & Cane Guru says...
"Hi Darrell -
Just wanted to send a note to say that I have just finished wrapping a complete Granger Special with your green thread. For the first time in MANY years I am totally satisfied with the look of the finished product. That thread is absolutely, dead-on perfect and makes doing the job much more rewarding. Glad you found it!...         -Michael Sinclair"

Olive #21 - This thread is manufactured by Gudebrod. It is size A silk thread and is marked USMC mil spec. I guess this thread was probably used on parachutes and became available during and after WWII. This thread is very strong and easy to work with. $4.00 per 50 yard spool. $6.00 per 95 yd.

Dark Brown #30 - This thread is manufactured by Belding Corticelli. It is size 0 silk thread and is marked 14 (color?). I have used this thread as tipping to match a faded black. It is very, very dark brown and is strong and supple. $4.00 per 50 yard spool.  $6.00 per 100 yards.

Black #1 - This thread is manufactured by Belding Corticelli. It is size 00 silk thread. $4.50/50 yards

Below are several silk threads some of which are scarce to near impossible to substitute such as the Granger Green & jasper thread that I have available.

Black #1 - Size 00. Every collector restorer should have a spool in their silk thread box.
White #2
-
Size 00. Every collector restorer should have a spool in their silk thread box.
Chinese Red #10 - Gudebrod #326. 2/0. Not as shiny as the vintage thread, but very acceptable. Another staple color. Also available in 3/0 200m spools for $7.00ea.
Dark Red #11 - Gudebrod #595. Nice deep red. A hard to find color. Very popular.
Garnet/Burgundy #12 - Gudebrod 5382. Sort of a wine color.
Dark Blue #17 - Gudebrod 9072. Different dye #. But should work nicely.
Tan/Beige #27 - Gudebrod #832. I stock this thread, but I recommend you spend the extra bucks and get my vintage thread which is MUCH more accurate in color for restorations and repairs. For new rods and complet rewraps, this thread is fine.
Medium Brown #28 - Gudebrod #541. Again, not as shiny as the vintage thread, but very acceptable. For some reason, the vintage Gudebrod thread looks a lot more snappy.
Dark Brown #30 Gudebrod #2619. Good stuff. Besides, I don't have any vintage thread in this color.
Gudebrod NCP Gold Nylon Size A - Okay, I know this is nylon, it's larger, but it's a nice color for tipping, no color preserver needed and hey it's cheap! $2.00 per 100yds

NEW! Finest Quality Filament Silk Thread

I now stock a wide assortment of this new thread! See the silk thread chart for the colors available. Many colors are available that are not listed on the chart.

Emerald Green #23 - Size 3/0 of the finest filament thread.  Beautiful rich green color with wonderful brilliance... just like a fine emerald.  $8.00 per 200 meter spool.
