We can build you a rod with one of the classic tapers or else a taper designed by the rod maker himself. We can supply you with rod blanks in Quad, Penta and Hex models by Venneri.
This rod is being crafted using a dark flamed then heat tempered cane, mirrored tip sections using 2x2x2 node spacing. Nickel silver ferrules, REC reel seat and comes complete with a black aluminum tube and brass caps. Hardware will be blued nickel silver fittings. McDowell Rods are $895.00 Venneri Bamboo Rod Blanks Robert Venneri is best known for his incredible reel seats. Definitely among the finest quality available at very affordable prices. His rod shop is now supplying us with rod blanks in Quad, Penta and standard Hexagonal sections. For a unique rod, I recommend the Gene Edwards Quadrate blank. 2pc/2tip ferruled. The blanks are flamed and hand rubbed with an oil finish to maintain low moisture within the sections. You can finish with a Tung Oil finish or use Spar Varnish or Poly equally well. A.J. is in a class by himself. One of the few professional rod makers that builds rods on a full time basis, A. J. Thramer is very well known and respected within the bamboo fly rod fishing community throughout the world. His current production output places him well above the average rodmaker. His current production I estimate is around 150 rods per year is about 3 times the rods of most other rod makers. His rods begin with hand split culms and then are hand straightened and the nodes are pressed or ground. They are then rough beveled by machine and tapered using a Dickerson type finish beveler. These strips are final hand planed on a traditional planing form and mic'ed and measured for accurate dimensions. So, by using the combined modern technology and classic measuring and forms, you get a hand split, hand planed rod with an accurate taper at a very reasonable cost. Pictured above is a Thramer rod
built on the PH Young "Midge" taper. One of the world's most famous
and favorite tapers. Hardy Bougle Reel extra. Currently he is building me two Dickerson 6611's. The first is scheduled to arrive around 10/20/01. I will be having him add a few special touches to these rods so they will be very special. These are 6'6" 2pc/2tip 3wt rods and will be dark flamed and have mirrored tips. They will also feature unique 5 Star Superfine cork grips made of 1/4" width cork ring, rarely seen on rods since the early 1900's by historical rod makers such as Thomas, Edwards & Payne's famous "Kosmic" rods. Dickerson usually built blonde rods but I like the looks of Thramer's flamed rods and these rods honor the famed Dickerson taper... they are not an attempt to deceive people into thinking that they were made by Lyle Dickerson. The Paul H. Young MIDGE rod is one of the all time great rod tapers for a stream or spring creek rod, yet it is known for being able to shoot 50-55' casts with accuracy and delicate presentation. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the ability of the caster, but nonetheless, if you have the ability, this rod has what you need for endless enjoyment. This little gem is a 6'3" 2 piece, 2 tip rod and includes a cotton rod sack and a aluminum rod tube. The Paul Young DRIGGS RIVER is probably one of the most loved rod tapers by both professional and amateur rod makers alike. It is a 5 wt rod that can cast an entire fly line without difficulty by the experienced hand. It is both accurate and can present the fly with irresistible presentation. It is a 7'2" 2 piece, 2 tip rod. His rods usually features Bellinger reel seats with nickel silver fittings & nickel silver ferrules that are machined by AJ that are replicas of the original PHY ferrules. The ferrules and hardware will be blued. The bamboo will be flamed and staggered using a 3x3 node pattern. A vintage PHY Midge or Driggs River Special rod today easily sells for $2,500-$3,500+ and because of the scarcity and cost, many of the collectors who own them don't fish them very often, if at all. Masters Series The Masters Series line is made up of rods and blanks built on the classic rod tapers of the masters from the Classic Era of flyfishing. Because rodmaking is such a time intensive business, it is impossible to rely on a single source for bamboo fly rods and rod blanks. So, in order to provide the bamboo rods below, I turn to several rod makers to hand craft the rods for you.
